1909-1911 E90-1 American Caramel Near Set (102 of 120) + 27 Misc. Cards

Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $20,880.00

Collection of 102 different E90-1 American Caramel card (out of 120 in the set), accompanied by an additional twenty-seven miscellaneous 1910-era cards from several other caramel and tobacco card issues. This is part of an original owner collection, consigned directly by the family of the gentleman who collected these cards as a youngster. Though somewhat low grade overall, this is a very substantial collection with many highlights and rarities, most in overall Good condition, a little rough but still very collectable, and ideal for the collector who does not want to spend a fortune, buts wants high quality, real, original 1910-era cards. The E90-1 set has long been considered by collectors to be the most significant of all early candy card sets, very much as T206 is the primary set of all 1910-era baseball tobacco cards. This near-complete set (102 of the 120 cards) represents a tremendous collecting achievement. Groups of E90-1s occasionally surface, but sets and near sets are rarely assembled or offered, primarily because there are so many very rare cards in the set. This E90-1 collection includes the rare Mitchell, Cincinnati (sometimes referred to as the "Honus Wagner of E cards") as well as the rare cards of Keeler, Duffy, and Joss, among others. The set is missing only the following eighteen cards for completion: Bescher, Bliss, Butler, Clarke/Phil., Ellis, Jackson, Keeler/port. - pink, Knight, Leach/throw and bat variation, Lobert, Lumley, McLean, Seigle, Stone/left hand, Sweeney/NY, Tenney, and Wallace. Keys: Baker (HOF, Gd), Bender (HOF, Pr-Fr), Bresnahan (HOF, Vg), Brown (HOF, Fr-Gd), Chance (HOF, Vg), Chase (Fr-Gd), Clarke/Pitt. (HOF, Gd), Cobb (HOF, Gd-Vg), Collins (HOF, Fr), Crawford (HOF, Fr-Gd), G. Davis (HOF, Gd), Demmitt (Fr-Gd), Donlin (Gd), Duffy (HOF, Vg), Engle (Fr), Fromme (Gd), Gibson/back view (Pr-Fr), Gibson/front view (Pr-Fr), Graham (Gd), Hall (Gd-Vg), Jennings (HOF, Fr-Gd), Joss/port. (HOF, Gd-Vg), Joss/pitching (HOF, Pr-Fr), Karger (Gd-Vg), Keeler/port. - red (HOF, Pr-Fr), Keeler/throwing (HOF, Fr), Lajoie (HOF, Fr), Marquard (HOF, Fr), Mathewson (HOF, Fr), Mitchell/Cinn. (Pr-Fr), Overall (Fr-Gd), Plank (HOF, Gd-Vg), Schlitzer (Gd-Vg), Speaker (HOF, Fr), Stahl (Vg), Sweeney/Boston (Pr-Fr), Tinker (HOF, Gd), Upp (Gd), Wagner/batting (HOF, Pr-Fr), Wagner/throwing (HOF, Fr-Gd), Walsh (HOF, Gd), Willis (HOF, pencil marks on the back, otherwise Vg), Young/Clev. (HOF, Vg), and Young/Boston (HOF, Fr). The cards in this collection display far better than suggested by their technically accurate grades. This collection represents a full 85% of the entire set, and is an ideal foundation for the building of a complete set, of which very few have ever been assembled. The eclectic group of twenty-seven additional cards include: 1) 1909 E92 Menagerie Back (E26) Error Card: Murphy. 2) 1909 E101 (2 cards): Hartsel and Zimmerman. 3) 1910 T210 Old Mill (4 cards): Series 1 - Pelkey, Series 5 - Bentley, Ferrell, Hicks. 4) 1910 T211 Red Sun: Bronkie. 5) 1910 E90-2 American Caramel Pirates (4 cards): Gibson, Hyatt, Leach, Leever. 6) 1910 E90-3 American Caramel White Sox (2 cards): Dougherty and Smith. 7) 1912 T207 Brown Background (4 cards): Latham, Schulte, Street, Tinker (Vg). 8) 1915 Cracker Jack (9 cards): #40, 45, 64, 76, 86, 100, 126, 147, 156. These additional 27 cards range in grade from Fair to Very Good (averaging Gd overall). Total 129 cards (102 E90-1s plus 27 different 1910-era cards from various manufacturers). Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $20,880.00
