1960s to 1980s Topps Nonsports Original Artwork Collection (23)

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $3,190.00

Topps has always been noted for the artwork created for its nonsport sets, from the earliest days of the 1950s to modern times. The artwork of many sets has much in common with the spirit of Mad magazine, and all of this artwork reflects the youth culture and spirit of the times in which they were created. Presented is a collection of seventeen original Topps artworks, almost all of which were purchased directly from the Topps Vault. These seventeen original Topps artworks are all executed in black ink, in many cases with lettering overlays: 1-2) Angry Stickers Test Issue Original Art 1960s: #5/6 and #17/18. 3) 1960s Rocks O' Gum Gum Container Original Art. 4) 1960s Rocks O' Gum Display Box Original Art. 5-17) Thirteen 1970 Funny Flash Cards Test Issue Original Art: #3, 8, 9, 9 (Diff), 11, 14, 16, 25, 27, 30, 32, 33, and 36. We believe that these artworks were created by noted comic artist Tom Sutton, as his name and address ink stamp appear on the back of two of the artworks. 18) 1971 Valentine Notes Original Art (very substantial, two boards each measuring 15 x 10 inches, representing the art for all sides of the foldover 1971 Valentine Note #30, accompanied by the published Valentine). 19) 1970s Topps unissued Lousy Little Library Original Art. 20) 1980s Topps unissued Gross Stickers Original Art (full color, gouache on board, 7.5 x 10 inches). 21-22) Ralph Bakshi Original Art (2 pieces, 1 signed). 23) The twenty-two Topps artworks are accompanied by an additional artwork by Jack Davis, featuring fellow Mad artist Al Feldstein (watercolor on paper, 16 x 21 inches, signed lower right). With the exception of the 1971 Valentine Note artwork and the Jack Davis original color presentation piece of Al Feldstein, which are both larger pieces, and the 1980s unissued Gross Sticker artwork, which is a full-color painting, each of the artworks is black and white and measures approximately 11 x 6 inches. Fourteen of the artworks are accompanied by Topps Vault LOAs. This is a unique collection assembled one artwork at a time, very likely at a cost far greater than our estimate. Total 23 artworks. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $3,190.00
