1954 Topps "Scoop" Original Card Artwork #12
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,972.00
1954 Topps "Scoop" original watercolor painting (5 x 3.5 inches) used to produce card #12, entitled "First Atom Bomb Dropped August 6, 1945," from this classic set which chronicles famous events throughout American history. This is an extremely noteworthy card from the set as it features the atomic bombing of Hiroshima which lead to Japan's surrender in WW II, perhaps the single most significant event of the twentieth century. This card, which recognizes the enormous historical importance of Hiroshima, was issued just nine years after the bombing. This is one of the most controversial cards in the set. Many have suggested that it is in some ways amazing that such a serious and tragic event should be captured on a bubble gum-card intended for youngsters, but the true presentation of important historical events is part of the enormous appeal of the 1954 Topps "Scoop" set. Perhaps no card represents this spirit more than card #12. The title on the back of the card announces "Atomic Bomb Dropped On Japan." The artwork is extremely detailed with bright colors. "Scoop" artworks are extremely rare. This example and the other three "Scoop" artworks presented in this auction are the first original paintings from this extremely popular early 1950s set we have ever offered. The artwork is in Near Mint condition and is accompanied by an example of the issued card. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,972.00
