1954 Topps "Scoop" Original Card Artwork #37

1954 Topps "Scoop" original watercolor painting (5 x 3.5 inches) used to produce card #37, entitled "John Brown's Raid," from this extremely popular set which chronicles famous events in American history. The "newspaper headline" on the back of the issued card announces "John Brown Raids Arsenal" and the accompanying story details the legendary antislavery leader's efforts "to rally slaves around him and lead them in a revolt that would smash slavery." The artwork is bright, crisp, clean, and very colorful. Includes additional image area which was cropped out by Topps on the issued card. "Scoop" artworks are extremely rare. This example and the other three "Scoop" artworks presented in this auction are the first original paintings from this extremely popular early 1950s set we have ever offered. The artwork is in Near Mint condition and is accompanied by an example of the issued card. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,624.00
