1952 Topps Wendell Willkie "Look 'n See" Original Card Artwork #120
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,276.00
Original 1952 Topps "Look 'n See" card artwork (3 x 4.25 inches). This is the original painting for card #120 Wendell Willkie, the great lawyer and politician who was the Republican nominee for the 1940 presidential election, which he lost to Franklin D. Roosevelt. Willkie was a great statesman who, following the election, was chosen by Roosevelt as a representative of the American people, and was sent on missions all over the world. This is a very striking artwork featuring an extraordinarily detailed portrait of Willkie with the world in the background, symbolic of Willkie's efforts to promote world peace and civil rights. This example and the other two "Look 'n See" artworks presented in this auction are the first original paintings from this classic early 1950s non-sport set we have seen. There is a very light glue stain along the bottom from the original mechanical stat pasteup. Excellent to Mint condition. The artwork is accompanied by an example of the issued card. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,276.00
