1934 R136 National Chicle "Sky Birds" Original Card Artwork #25
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,740.00
Offered is the actual original artwork to card #25 Joe Wehner from the 108-card 1934 R136 "Sky Birds" set issued by National Chicle. The Sky Birds set features famous pilots and airplanes of the day, and has always been regarded as one of the most popular of all 1930s non-sport gum card sets, in part because of its bright colors, sharp details, art deco designs, and popular subject matter. Artwork for card sets from the 1930s is exceedingly rare. Back in the late 1970s a group of material surfaced in the collecting world directly from the family of a National Chicle employee, which included approximately 100 artworks from several National Chicle non-sport sets, including "Sky Birds." This artwork originated directly from this historic find. Robert Edward Auctions handled virtually all of this material at the time. Today, these artworks have long been scattered to the four corners of the collecting world. When they do turn up, all can be traced directly to this find. The offered artwork is an exceptional example of these extremely rare and highly prized original 1930s gum card paintings. As is the case with all National Chicle "Sky Bird" artworks, the painting is gouache on thick artist's board, and measures 4-5/8 x 7 inches (image 4-5/8 x 5.5 inches). It is fascinating to note that the cloud design above pilot Joe Wehner's left shoulder on the original artwork was very slightly modified by the printer on the issued card. The printer actually added a blue overlay on the cloud in the background to change the shape of this cloud on the issued card, and the clouds to his right have been eliminated entirely. The printer was apparently very concerned about the clouds on this card, as is evidenced by the printer's notation on the margin above, reading "Clouds Pure White Wehner." Indeed, on the issued card, the clouds have been made pure white by the printer, as opposed to the slightly blue-tinged clouds as appears on the artwork. The artwork is extremely clean, with sharp, bright, crisp colors, and is in Excellent condition. Accompanied by an example of the issued card. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,740.00
