1888 N268 P. Lorillard "Circus Scenes" Near-Complete Set (24/25)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,508.00
Near-complete set of twenty-four cards (missing only one for completion) of the circa 1888 N268 P. Lorillard "Circus Scenes" cards. Condition ranges from Vg to Ex (includes a few cards slightly lesser, but all still Good or better, and all very attractive cards). This exceptionally colorful set, which was called "Circus Scenes," was issued with P. Lorillard's Red Cross Long Cut and Sensation Cut Plug tobacco brands. This is one of those unusual nineteenth-century nonsport tobacco card sets that one is lucky to find a single card represented in a big collection. This issue stands out as unusual and rare to even the most seasoned veteran collector. The popular subject matter of this set also makes it particularly memorable, but, like many of the card sets issued by smaller, unusual brands, the "Circus Scenes" set is as noted for its rarity as it is for its exciting designs. This set was issued back in the days when the circus really did travel to town, and "joining the circus" was actually possible. Each card, measuring 2.25 x 4 inches, features a colorful, graphically detailed lithographic image relating to different performances seen at the circus. This is an extremely attractive set with outstanding eye-appeal. Rarely offered as a complete set. This issue is highly prized by nonsport tobacco card collectors. Total 24 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,508.00
