1888 G22 Allen & Ginter "World's Decorations" Tobacco Banner

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,972.00

Full-color advertising display poster (20.25 x 29.25 inches) for the N30 Allen & Ginter "World's Decorations" card series issued in 1888. Each of the cards in this set features an elaborate "medal" of knighthood and chivalry from various nations and from a variety of time periods. The full-color tobacco banner (20.25 x 29.25 inches) pictures all fifty cards in the set, all surrounding the famous Allen & Ginter "logo man" in the center. The top reads "Allen & Ginter - Richmond, Virginia." Along the bottom is an advertisement for the full title of the series, "Decorations of the Principal Orders of Knighthood and Chivalry of the World." Tobacco banners are one of the most substantial and most elusive treasures of all card and advertising collecting. They were not issued to the public. These posters were only distributed to tobacco stores, and strictly for store display, so it is understandable that so few examples have survived in any condition. In almost all cases, fewer than ten examples of any given card-related tobacco banner is known to exist, and in some cases only two or three examples are known. This is the first example of this striking banner we have ever seen. The poster still has its original metal hanging strips along the top and bottom edges. This example has some minor horizontal creasing (at the top through A&G and one through the bottom row of medals, probably from long ago being rolled) and a few other very minor imperfections, but is extremely bright and clean, with overall Excellent appearance. This is a beautiful and very rare display piece which hung in a tobacco store, proudly announcing the new card series and encouraging patrons to buy Allen & Ginter products during the height of the first card-insert craze of the 1880s. Matted and framed to the total dimensions of 27 x 33 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,972.00
