Circa 1970 Frank Frazetta Original Watercolor Artwork

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,856.00

Frank Frazetta has been one of the most influential and important artists of the twentieth century. He is world renowned as the master of the fantasy genre. Frazetta, more than any other artist, is credited with defining the look of Warren Publishing's magazines (Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella) and influencing the world of fantasy art. Frank Frazetta's various cover assignments and many cover paintings are some of the most famous and most reproduced artworks of the past fifty years. He is a rarity in the world of illustration art in that his popularity is literally worldwide. It is almost incredible that his work is virtually nonexistent in the marketplace, but the Frazetta family has always closely guarded the originals of his work. Most examples which are in private hands have remained buried in private collections for decades. The offered example was originally sold in the second issue of Russ Cochran's Graphic Gallery sales catalog, published in 1973, and was kept by its original buyer for over thirty years until it was offered and sold at auction for $2,444 in April 2004; it has been consigned to this auction directly from the buyer at the 2004 auction. This undated illustration artwork (ink on bristol) was hand-colored and signed by Frazetta. The illustration displays a somewhat humorous illustration of what appears to be a jockey giving his horse a swift kick in the rear. Frazetta originals are usually either black-and-white pieces, which of course can also be extremely expensive when offered, or full-color paintings, which can be prohibitively expensive. The fact that this is a fully hand-colored piece, and also a fully finished piece (as opposed to a preliminary, which is the case with many Frazetta originals) makes this a very rare opportunity to acquire a particularly high-quality and relatively affordable example of original artwork from the legendary Frank Frazetta, without spending the literally tens of thousands of dollars that many larger Frazetta color pieces would sell for if available. Near Mint condition. Dimensions: 10.75 x 8 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,856.00
