Original Li'l Abner Sunday cartoon artwork by Al Capp. The strip, dated 4/30/50, involves Abner's discovery of a centaur in Dogpatch. In addition to the title character, the strip also features Mammy and Pappy Yokum, as well as Available Jones. The work has been executed in pen and ink on four individual panels and is signed by Capp in the lower right. From 1934 until 1977, Al Capp's Li'l Abner comic strip was one of the first things people turned to when they read their local paper. Long hailed as one of the greatest strips ever created, Capp's legendary characters have maintained an almost iconic status within our popular culture to this day. In 1952, when Capp finally decided to wed Li'l Abner and Daisy Mae, the union made front page news in papers across the land and the fictional couple was even featured on the cover of Life magazine. The four panels (19.5 x 22 inches) have been joined together by means of tape on the reverse and display normal production marks and outlining, including some tape residue on the front of the third panel. Excellent condition overall. Framed to total dimensions of 25.25 x 29 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $406.00
