Robert Motherwell The Madrid Suite Prints (10)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $3,480.00

Collection of ten rare, limited-edition lithographs, collectively titled The Madrid Suite, by Robert Motherwell (1915-1991), one of the most important abstract impressionists of the twentieth century. Issued in 1965, these ten black-and-white lithographs were produced in collaboration with master printer Irwin Hollander and reflect the nature of drawings made by Motherwell in 1958 during his honeymoon in Madrid, hence their name. Each of the ten different lithographs is individually numbered "31/100" and has been signed by Motherwell in the lower left. As noted along the base of the artist's introduction sheet, all of the numbered proofs were printed on white arches paper, with each measuring 22 x 30 inches, in an edition of 100. Also noted on the sheet is the fact that some artist and trial proofs also exist on BFK Rives Paper and Buff Arches. All of the prints are in Near Mint condition and are housed in their original leather-bound storage portfolio as issued for optimal storage. This is an extremely rare complete collection of these famous prints by one of the most highly respected American artists of the twentieth century. Total: 10 lithographs. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+ SOLD FOR $3,480.00
