1959 Bob Dylan Signed High School Yearbook
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,350.00
"Robert Zimmerman: To join Little Richard-Latin Club 2; Social Studies Club 4" is how Bob Dylan is memorialized in this personally signed copy of the 1959 Hibbing (MN) High School yearbook. The future rock-n-roll legend has signed to the book's original owner on one of the end pages: "Dear Winnie, I guess this is the last day we'll see Miss Barron. Too bad huh, don't you wish she'd follow us thru the rest of our lives and guide us. That'd be great. Good luck to you an' your boyfriend. A classmate, Bob Z." It is apparent, due to the faintness of the salutation and first line (still entirely legible), that Dylan's pen was running out of ink and he apparently switched pens to complete the inscription. The remainder of the text and Dylan's signature both grade "9/10." Dylan's own senior picture (identified as "Robert Zimmerman") appears on page 76, and the baby-faced photo challenges us to recognize him as a future leader of protest and rebellion. Dylan's high school sweetheart, Echo Helstrom, the original "Girl From North Country," appears on page 42. Dylan changed his name one year after graduating high school, taking his new surname from the poet Dylan Thomas. The blue ink inscription from Dylan is in a small, but very neat hand. The salutation and signature are in an area completely undisturbed by other tributes on the page. Early Dylan signatures and writing samples from his days as Robert Zimmerman are extremely rare. Given the rising popularity of celebrity high school yearbooks, this signed example stands as one of the premier collectibles relating to the early career of the man who would soon emerge as the musical spokesman for an entire generation. The 180-page leather-bound yearbook features numerous inscriptions throughout and displays only light wear to the cover from normal handling. The yearbook has one detached page (still present) and is otherwise overall in Excellent condition, with interior pages tight, clean, and crisp. This is a remarkable signed keepsake from the high school days of a rock and folk music immortal. LOA from Steve Grad & John Reznikoff/PSA DNA.Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000.
