1958 Signed Contract Between Marilyn Monroe and Milton H. Greene (The Prince and the Showgirl)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $3,770.00
Three-page contract, dated February 26, 1958, signed by Marilyn Monroe as President of Marilyn Monroe Productions, Inc. and famed glamor photographer Milton H. Greene. The legal agreement, between Marilyn Monroe Productions and Greene, first acknowledges that Marilyn Monroe Productions owns the negative and copyright of the motion picture The Prince and the Showgirl, and secondly, that said negative is to be assigned to Greene by the company as security for payments to be made to him by Monroe. It is signed in blue ink on page three by both Marilyn Monroe ("9/10") and Milton H. Greene ("9"). This contract was most likely a legal formality for the distribution of money between the two, as Monroe and Greene, together, founded Marilyn Monroe Productions, Inc. in the mid 1950s. The company allowed Monroe greater artistic freedom then she previously enjoyed at the major studios and produced, among others, the film mentioned here in this contract, The Prince and the Showgirl. Greene was already a world renowned fashion photographer when he first met Monroe on an assignment for Look magazine in the early 1950s. The two quickly hit it off and soon became very close friends. During the decade Greene produced a series of now famous photos of Monroe (many of which were shot while Monroe was living with Greene and his family at his Connecticut home) and also collaborated with her on her autobiography. Monroe's fame as an actress and celebrity paralleled that of Greene's in the world of photography. Numerous books showcasing his work have been published and he has had major exhibitions at a number of prestigious institutions including the Chicago Art Institute, The Smithsonian Institute and the International Center of Photography in New York. The contract (8.5 x 11 inches) has filing binder holes at the top, staple holes in the upper left corner, and a few minor creases near the bottom of page two. Excellent condition overall. This is an extraordinary document featuring the signatures of the era's most famous celebrity and the photographer who helped to create her legend. LOA from Steve Grad & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $3,770.00
