Circa 1920s "Lollipop" Scale

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,624.00

This coin-op "Lollipop" scale, produced by the Watling Scale Co., displays the user's weight for just a penny. Standing 72 inches in height, the scale features a large circular face supported by a thin, cylindrical support pole. Two individual charts on the face provide the recommended weight for both men and women, respectively, based upon their height. Penny scales were extremely popular at amusement parks and arcade galleries during the first half of the twentieth century and also quite profitable for their distributors. However, by the 1940s the introduction of inexpensive bathroom scales all but signaled the end to their production. Because of their weight and bulky nature, most were simply discarded, thus accounting for their scarcity today. The unit is in working order and has been beautifully refurbished with the exception of the facing, which remains in its original state. An attractive and highly visual display piece for either home or office. Please Note: due to the size and/or weight of this lot, shipping charges may be substantial. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,624.00
