Original 1980 Winter Olympics Silver Medal
Starting Bid - $800.00, Sold For - $2,204.00
Original silver medal produced for the 1980 Winter Olympics held at Lake Placid, New York. The sterling silver medal was crafted by renowned jewelers Tiffany & Co. and bears both the company's name and date of manufacture ("1979") engraved along the edge. The front features both the Olympic torch and logo, along with the words "XIII Olympic Winter Games." The reverse displays a floral pattern and reads "Lake Placid 1980." The medal is an extraordinary work of art in high relief, measuring an impressive three inches in diameter. Olympic Athletes rarely part with their medals. This particular example was never presented to an athlete, and is a very rare example not in the hands of an Olympic medal winner. Despite American speed skater Eric Heiden winning a record five individual gold medals, the 1980 Winter Olympics will forever be marked by the U.S. Hockey team's dramatic upset victory over the Soviet Union in the semifinal round of the tournament. Today, that win is considered among the most memorable sporting events of the twentieth century. This is a rare and extremely significant memento from that historic winter Olympiad. Near Mint condition. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $2,204.00
