1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug John Ward
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,900.00
Graded VG 40 by SGC. Beautiful N300 Mayo's Cut Plug example of Hall of Famer John Ward. This is one of John Ward's most striking cards. Extremely attractive in all respects, with a bold portrait, no creases, just some light edge and corner wear, as is almost always the case with Mayo's due to their condition-sensitive flush-to-the-border design. The back of the card has some extremely minor light paper remnants from scrapbook removal, which is no doubt responsible for the harsh grade given by SGC. This card has a solid Vg-Ex or better appearance on the front. Ward is an especially fascinating card in the Mayo set because his card was issued two ways: one listing him as "John Ward: 2nd. B." and the other identifying him as "John Ward: Retired." This is the first card of Ward issued by Mayo, listing him as "John Ward: 2nd. B.," prior to his formal status as retired, and is therefore also his final card issued as a player. This is a spectacular mid-grade example of one of the most majestic of all nineteenth-century cards, and one of John Ward's most classic cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000.
