1969 Bobby Jones Signed Letter With Significant Golf Content

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,856.00

One-page typed signed letter from golf legend Bobby Jones to book illustrator Anthony Ravielli. This extraordinary letter, dating from late in Jones' life when he was suffering greatly from syringomyelia ( a disease of the central nervous system), finds him still preoccupied with the game of golf. In this instructive missive, written upon his personal stationery and dated August 12, 1969, Jones offers constructive criticism to illustrator Anthony Ravielli, with whom he is collaborating on the book Bobby Jones and the Basic Golf Swing. Jones writes in full: "Dear Tony: The only possible criticism I could make of your illustrations of our book relates to the apparent lack of full extension of the left arm at the top of the swing, as shown on pages 27 and 28. Please compare these pages with the left arm of Julius Boros on the enclosed cover of Golf World. The photographs you used for our illustrations were obviously posed, whereas the photograph of Boros is not. Boros's clubface is looking a bit too much skyward to suit my style, but the straightness of his left arm is exemplary. With Best Regards, Sincerely, Bob [signed]." Jones' signature, penned in black ink ("7'), reflects his ailing health at the time and is somewhat shaky. The combination of his debilitating illness and his close working relationship with Ravielli obviously resulted in his simply signing the correspondence, "Bob." Included with the letter is the originally enclosed cover of Golf World mentioned by Jones as well as the original mailing envelope, which bears the printed return address of Jones' law firm, "Jones, Bird & Howell." Interestingly, the enclosed cover of Golf World represents Jones' personal copy, as it still bears the attached mailing label addressed to "Robert T. Jones Jr." Signed letters from Jones penned during the final stages of his illness (the symptoms of the disease were similar to ALS and left him more and more incapacitated as it progressed) are extremely rare. This particular letter, with its marvelous content, is certainly one of, if not the finest, Bobby Jones letters dating from his later years. Although the book is not mentioned by name in his letter, Bobby Jones and the Basic Golf Swing was published in 1969 and features illustrations by Anthony Ravielli. It was the last book authored by Jones published during his lifetime. Jones died in 1971 at the age of 69. The letter (7.25 x 10.25 inches) displays two horizontal mailing folds and a paper clip impression along the top border and is in Excellent to Mint condition. The attached cover of Golf World (8.5 x 10.75 inches) also bears identical horizontal mailing folds and is in Excellent condition. The mailing envelope (9.5 x 4 inches) is also in Excellent condition. The envelope and magazine cover are ideal for display with the letter, and together the three items could be used to create a very impressive framed display. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Total: 3 items (letter, magazine cover, envelope). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,856.00
