1899 John L. Sullivan Autograph Letter

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,972.00

One-page handwritten letter signed by legendary heavyweight boxing champion John L. Sullivan. In his letter, dated May 26, 1899 and penned in black ink on Hotel Dante & Dante's Inferno Cafe stationery, Sullivan writes to his attorney, Frank McElroy, regarding their dispute over nonpayment of legal services. Sullivan writes in full: "Dear Sir, I received your letter and the tone of it was rather independent. You know that things in some people's life do not come smashing at all times. Give me an opportunity and you will receive all that is coming to you - You tracked me out when I glanced over your note of communication and it made me think you were not very friendly to me. I would be glad to make it good just as soon as convenient for one to do so. However, in the meantime come over and have a small bottle and good cigar with me. Yours Truly - John L Sullivan." There is some slight bleeding to the signature (grading "8"), as well as to a few words in the text. The letter is accompanied by McElroy's unsigned reply, dated December 1, 1899, which reads in full: "Dear Sir: - In reply to yours of Nov. 26th, I wish to inform you that for legal services rendered, commencing with the Vallette case against you in 1892, down to the present time, you have failed to pay any sum whatever on account of the same although repeatedly promised. Can you at this late day consider me unfriendly towards you because payment is requested?" The Sullivan letter (8-1/2 x 11 inches) bears one horizontal and two vertical mailing folds (with a minute tear along a single intersection) and is in Excellent condition. The McElroy letter (5-1/4 x 8-1/2 inches) is in Excellent condition with a single vertical mailing fold. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,972.00
