Cliff Montgomery Columbia University Football Collection (3)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $406.00
Collection of three significant items relating to the famed football career of Columbia University quarterback and College Football Hall of Fame inductee Cliff Montgomery: 1934 Rose Bowl "Player of Game" Medallion awarded to Montgomery; and two rare, complete tickets to the 1934 Rose Bowl. The highlight of this grouping, which originates directly from Montgomery's estate, is Montgomery's "Player of Game" medallion issued by the Helms Athletic Foundation. The circular medallion (2.75 inches in diameter) features a floral display on the front and is engraved "Awarded to Clifford Montgomery in recognition of Rose Bowl Player of Game 1934." The medallion (Ex) is housed within a rectangular block of clear Lucite (9.25 x 3.75 x 1 inches) together with a full ticket (Vg-Ex) to the 1934 Rose Bowl game (neither item can be removed from the Lucite). The 1934 Rose Bowl, played on January 1st, matched Montgomery's Columbia Lions against the heavily favored Stanford Cardinals. In what is still considered one of the greatest upsets in college football history, Columbia defeated Stanford 7-0, thus capping the finest football season in Columbia's storied history. The Helms Athletic Foundation, which presented the "Player of Game" medallion to Montgomery, was actually founded in 1936, two years after the game. In 1941, Bill Schroeder, managing director of the Helms Athletic Foundation, retroactively selected the national football champions for the period beginning in 1883 (the first year of a scoring system) through 1940. They also awarded individual honors at that time as well, with this medallion being one such example. Included with Lucite display piece is another full, complete ticket to the 1934 Rose Bowl (5.5 x 2.5 inches, Ex). Total items: 3 (two tickets and medallion). Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800.
