1969 Jimmy Wynn Houston Astros Game-Used Road Flannel Jersey
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $7,540.00
Houston Astros road flannel jersey worn by Jimmy Wynn in 1969. The gray road jersey is lettered "Houston" across the front and features the number "24" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in blue felt on orange tackle twill. A Major League "100th Anniversary" patch (worn by every Major League club in 1969) adorns the left sleeve, while a circular Houston Astros team patch appears on the opposite sleeve. (The Astros switched their team patch from the left to right sleeve in 1969 because of the addition of the Anniversary patch.) The size, uniform number and year ("40 24 69") of the garment are chain-stitched in black upon a strip tag in the collar. Located on the left front tail are a "Rawlings 40" label, a wash tag and an adjacent strip tag that reads "Set 1 1969." The jersey is all original, with no alterations, and displays moderate wear throughout, including a few light scattered stains, as well as minor tears and seam separations to each of the numerals. Nicknamed "The Toy Cannon" for his short but powerful physique, Jimmy Wynn debuted with the Astros in 1963, one year after the club's inaugural season. Beginning in 1965, his first full season, through 1970, Wynn led the Astros in home runs every season, including a career high 37 in 1967. Wynn batted .269 with 33 home runs and 87 RBI in 1969. In 2005 Jimmy Wynn became the seventh player in Astros history to have his number permanently retired. This is an exceptional Houston Astros flannel jersey worn by the club's first major star. Graded A8.5 by MEARS (base grade of 10, with 1.5 points deducted for the tears/seam separations to the numerals). LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
