1972 Willie Mays SF Giants Game-Used & Signed Home Knit Uniform

Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $11,020.00

San Francisco Giants home knit jersey and pants worn by Hall of Fame outfielder Willie Mays in 1972. This garment is one of the last, possibly the very last, San Francisco Giants home uniforms ever worn by Mays, as he only appeared with the club in nineteen games that season before being traded to the New York Mets in 1972. This was a new jersey style in 1972, marking the first season in which the Giants wore knits. The white knit jersey (button front) is lettered "Giants" across the front and features the number "24" on the reverse. All letters and numbers are appliqu├ęd in black felt on orange twill. The name "Mays" is chain-stitched in black upon a white strip tag located in the collar. On the left front tail are a "1972" year tag; a "McAuliffe" label; a "42" size tag; and (to left of those three tags) a laundry tag. Mays has signed the jersey in blue Sharpie ("8") on the left breast. The matching button-fly pants feature both a "McAuliffe" label and "1972" year tag in the waistband, as well as a white strip tag that reads "Mays 32 24" (denoting the player's name, waist size and uniform number, respectively) in black chain-stitch. A laundry tag appears along the rear seam. Original and unaltered, both the jersey and pants display light to moderate wear throughout. While Mays' final season with the Giants was less than stellar (he batted .184 in his nineteen games with the club), his accomplishments over the course of his twenty-two-year career were nothing less than spectacular. His lifetime totals of 660 home runs (fourth on the all-time list), 1,903 RBI (seventh all-time), 2,062 runs (fifth all-time), 3,283 hits (ninth all-time) and .557 slugging percentage (tenth all-time) only serve as a comparative measure and can never fully express his greatness on the diamond. He was, arguably, the greatest all-around player in history, displaying a rare combination of speed, power and athleticism seldom seen before or since. Mays spent twenty full seasons in a Giants uniform, and during that time he was selected to nineteen All-Star games. It is rare to find a Mays jersey from any era accompanied by the matching pants. This uniform marks the end of an era in baseball history and, in turn, represents one of the most significant of all Willie Mays or Hall of Famer uniforms in existence. Graded a perfect A10 by MEARS. This is the first Willie Mays uniform from his final season with the Giants that we have ever seen and is the only one in the MEARS population report. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$15,000. SOLD FOR $11,020.00
