Circa 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers Baseball Cap Attributed to Pee Wee Reese

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,044.00

Circa 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers professional model cap attributed to Dodgers' team captain and Hall of Fame shortstop Pee Wee Reese during the 1955 World Championship season. Because there is no number on the bill of the cap, collectors may value this cap as only an extremely rare authentic 1955 Dodgers cap without attribution to any player. Its attribution to Pee Wee Reese, however, is with great merit and relies on the fact that it originally was accompanied by Pee Wee Reese's 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers uniform. The cap is accompanied by two letters. The first, dated January 4, 1992, is by former Dodgers player Bob Aspromonte, from whom this cap was originally obtained. In 1992 Aspromonte sold this cap as part of a complete 1955 Pee Wee Reese game worn uniform and in his letter (photocopy only) he states: "Your purchase of the Brooklyn Dodger uniform of Pee Wee Reese 1955 Set One, was the uniform worn during the pennant chase and World Series of 1955..." Over the years, the original purchaser of the uniform broke up the ensemble and sold some of the pieces separately. That fact is conveyed in the second letter dated August 31, 2005 from this longtime and well-respected dealer who writes to the original purchaser of the cap (at our request to document the history of the cap): "To the best of my knowledge, the Brooklyn Dodger cap was part of a complete 1955 Pee Wee Reese uniform, that was purchased from Bob Aspromonte, a former Brooklyn Dodger in 1956. The uniform was sold off in different pieces to different purchasers over the years." While this cap bears no interior markings (i.e., name and/or uniform number) that positively identify it as a Reese cap, we are quite confident, based upon the compelling and verifiable documentation which accompanies it, that this cap was indeed worn by Reese during the 1955 season. The blue wool cap features an embroidered white "B" on the front and a white button along the top. A "McAuliffe" label appears along the back of the interior headband, as does a stamp reading "Pro KM Cap." The cap displays light-to-moderate wear throughout including soiling along the interior headband. The cap's documented history strongly supports its identification as a Brooklyn Dodgers cap worn by Pee Wee Reese in 1955, though the reserve and estimate on this cap account for no premium to this attribution. At the very least, the offered piece is an authentic 1950s Brooklyn Dodgers cap and has been graded such by Mears. LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200.
