1926 "N173 Old Judge" Washington Nationals Display
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $812.00
If the images upon this large-format display look familiar to collectors it is with good reason. The photos used are the very same images that appear on N173 Old Judge cabinet cards issued in 1888. Approximately ten similar displays have been seen over the years, each featuring a different team. In the early days of the organized hobby, collectors often misidentified these displays as uncut sheets of N173 Old Judge. In fact, they are produced by a very different means than Old Judges. The images are printed directly onto the displays as opposed to being original photographs mounted. They are very old but do not date from the 1880s. We believe that these "N173 Displays" actually date from 1926, and were made as decorative pieces for display at the 50th anniversary celebration of the National League. The offered example is titled "Washington Nationals in the 1890s" and features nine members of the Washington club including catcher Connie Mack in his playing days and center fielder Dummy Hoy. In addition to Mack and Hoy, also included are Whitney, Donnelly, Irwin, Daley, Shoch, Myers and Murray. The piece has been matted and framed with each image appearing in its own window. Printed on heavy cardboard stock. Excellent condition. Measures 27.25 x 18.5 inches. Framed to total dimensions of 31.5 x 23 inches. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $812.00
