1921-1931 Dave Bancroft Side Written Pro Model Bat
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,640.00
Extremely rare Hillerich & Bradsby professional model (pre model #) bat, dating from the 1921-1931 manufacturing period, exhibits heavy game use including ball and cleat marks, and deadwood on the reverse of the barrel which has been repaired with nine small vintage nails. The center brand label is deeply defined. The barrel is blank with no player name due to the fact that Bancroft had an exclusive contract with Spalding throughout much of his career. This bat originated directly from the H&B vaults and is clearly side written "37 oz. Dave Bancroft 8-7-26" on the back of the barrel in grease pencil. Remnants of the shipping label used to return the bat to the manufacturer for reorder are still visible on the front of the barrel. Dave Bancroft is widely considered the best shortstop of his era. A competitive and inspirational leader, he helped the Giants win the 1921, 1922, and 1923 National League pennants and two World Series titles. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1971. This extraordinary example is one of only two Dave Bancroft game bats known to exist. Side writing such as that which appears on this bat is very significant as it is considered the moral equivalent of having an actual letter of authenticity from Bancroft himself, and decisively places the bat in his hands at the time. An extremely rare Hall of Famer game bat, one of only two Dave Bancroft game bats known to exist. Length: 34.75 inches. Weight: 37 ounces. SCD Authentic Grade: A10. LOAs from Dave Bushing/SCD Authentic and John Taube & Vince Malta/PSA DNA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $4,640.00
