1921-1931 Edd Roush Side Written Pro Model Bat

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $4,060.00

Hillerich & Bradsby signature model (pre-model #) bat, dating from the 1921-1931 manufacturing period, exhibits considerable game use including ball, stitch, cleat and bat rack marks, a few minor chips in the knob, and deadwood on the reverse of the barrel. The bat retains factory side writing on the barrel with Roush's name and date that appears to be "5-15-26." Hand carved into the knob is what appears to be a symbol reading "G2" which has no known reference to Roush. A slight handle crack (approx.10 inches) is visible. It is interesting to note that Roush always claimed that he never broke a bat during his career, though this bat suggests otherwise. Roush favored particularly heavy thick-handled bats throughout his career. Roush's bat design more closely resembles a large club rather than a modern bat. Much of the weight in Roush's bats was in the handle and in his hands that unusual design somehow allowed him greater versatility at the plate. Roush began his career with the Federal League and quickly established himself as a top hitter. When the league folded following the 1915 season, he wound up playing for the New York Giants in 1916, but Roush and manager McGraw clashed personally to such a serious degree that he was traded in midseason to Cincinnati. It was there that his brilliant career flourished. He led the league in hitting in 1917 and 1919, and during the next eleven years his average would never dip below .304. Roush finished his career in 1931 with a lifetime average of .323. This is an extremely desirable side written Hall of Famer game bat, used by one of the game's greatest hitters, as well as a participant in the infamous 1919 World Series. Length: 33.75 inches. Weight: 38 ounces. SCD Authentic Grade: A8.5. LOAs from Dave Bushing/SCD Authentic and John Taube & Vince Malta/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $4,060.00
