1933 Goudey Big League Gum Advertising Poster

Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $17,400.00

Spectacular high-grade full-color 1933 Goudey "Big League" Chewing Gum advertising poster. This is a stunning example, very possibly the finest in existence. The 1933 Goudey advertising poster is one of the most significant of all baseball card-related advertising pieces. The poster (14-1/8 x 11-1/2 inches) advertises the classic 1933 Goudey "Big League" bubble-gum card set, the very first and the most widely collected bubble-gum card set ever issued. With an appearance very similar to that of an uncut sheet, it was designed to be displayed in candy store windows to encourage youngsters to collect the set. The poster pictures 24 cards (all are cards between #'s 49 and 96) including five Hall of Famers: Babe Ruth, Tris Speaker, Red Ruffing, Eppa Rixey, and Jesse Haines. A red banner across the bottom reads "New Pictures with Big League Chewing Gum Including Babe Ruth." The first 48 cards issued by Goudey sold very well. This advertising poster made sure that kids understood that the new cards were out, and that if they bought packs of Goudey Gum baseball cards, they would not be purchasing duplicates of the same previously issued card numbers 1 thru 48. The 24 newly issued cards, featured in glorious full-color on the poster, made sure that nothing was lost in the translation. No youngster could possibly mistake these pictured cards - especially as they include the first appearance of Babe Ruth! - for the earlier issued cards. This poster was a call to action! It has never been used, and still has the original light strips of clear glue along the top and bottom which are part of the poster's design and which allowed it to be affixed directly to a candy store window. The colors are almost impossibly bright and strong, with no fading whatsoever, appearing exactly as they did in 1933. When issued, to allow for mailing, these posters were very carefully folded by the Goudey Gum Company and sent to retailers around the country. This is an ideal example in all respects, including with reference to fold lines. The fold lines on this example are virtually undetectable. (We originally thought that perhaps this poster had never been folded.) Most of the known examples of this poster have undergone extensive restoration to make them presentable. This remarkable example is completely original, with no restoration. With reference to display value, the 1933 Goudey advertising poster is not just a classic due to its design and purpose. The colors are actually bolder and brighter than they appear on the issued cards, further contributing to its stunning visual appeal. This is an extraordinary example of one of card collecting's most significant advertising displays. In Near Mint condition. Beautifully framed to dimensions of 17 x 20 inches. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$20,000. SOLD FOR $17,400.00
