1910 A's and Cubs World Series Tablet Cover Advertising Samples

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $522.00

Previously unknown 1910 A's and Cubs team composite salesman's sample cover designs advertising a set of two writing tablets commemorating the competing teams of the 1910 World Series. In the 1910 era through the 1920s, children's writing tablets featuring individual baseball players on their covers were very popular. It is unknown if these extraordinary writing tablet designs were ever actually issued, as no full tablets examples are known. In fact, we have never before seen a writing tablet cover featuring a team composite, only writing tablets featuring one or several players. This writing tablet advertising sample has the appearance of an uncut "sheet" of two tablet covers. The reverse features advertising for the tablets, which are called "Ahead of the Game Champion Pen Tablets," inviting orders from the Samuel Cupples Woodenware Company of St. Louis and Chicago at 32 cents per dozen ("Order Quick, First Come, First Served"). These tablets were designed for sale prior to the 1910 World Series. Because no full tablet examples have ever surfaced, we believe that it is likely that the short window of planned production and sale caused the printing company to reconsider production plans; and the offered advertising piece, the only one known to date, is all that remains of what would have been two of the most striking and elaborately designed of all baseball writing tablets. The portraits used on the tablet covers are by legendary baseball photographer Carl Horner. Each player is identified by name and position. Hall of Famers include Mack, Bender, Collins, Baker, Tinker, Evers, Chance, and Brown. This is an extremely unusual and impressive World Series-related advertising rarity, ideal for display. Overall in Very Good to Excellent condition. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $522.00
