Circa 1910 Christy Mathewson & Honus Wagner Art Print

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,392.00

Extremely rare circa 1910 advertising art print featuring one of the most well known baseball images of the era by artist Fletcher Ransom. The painting on this print features a game in progress between the N. Y. Giants and the Pittsburgh Pirates at the Polo Grounds, circa 1910. Christy Mathewson is on the mound, Chief Meyers is behind the plate, and Honus Wagner is sliding, attempting to steal home. Umpire Bill Klem, with arm extended and thumb raised, calls him out. The painting from which this art print was reproduced is the work of Fletcher C. Ransom, former illustrator for Harper's Weekly. We have read that Mathewson not only posed for the painting, but cooperated with the artist to make this picture authentic in every detail. This image was reproduced for many uses. We have even seen a jigsaw puzzle with this image dating from the 1910 era. The print advertises "Compliments - Southern Coal & Coke Co. - Knoxville, Tenn." in black overprint lettering in the lower left, and was apparently issued as an advertising premium for special customers. "Fletcher C. Ransom" is signed (preprinted) in the lower left. One very small, slight tear in the lower right corner is virtually undetectable, otherwise in Near Mint condition. Dimensions: 23 x 17.5 inches. Beautifully matted and framed to total dimensions of 33.5 x 27.5 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,392.00
