Circa 1952 Mickey Mantle Fan Club Pin

Starting Bid - $3,500.00, Sold For - $5,800.00

Presented is a simply extraordinary example of the "King of All Postwar Baseball Pins": The circa 1952 Mickey Mantle Fan Club celluloid pin. With fewer than five known examples, this pin is a legendary collecting rarity, both as a baseball pinback, and as a significant Mickey Mantle item. It is no accident that this pin is one of the few which have the honor of appearing on the cover of the recently released 586-page hardcover book Baseball Pinback Buttons by Paul Muchinsky (2004, Great Oaks Press, Summerfield, N.C.). The Mickey Mantle Fan Club pin holds the record at auction for any postwar baseball celluloid, when Barry Halper's example sold for $12,650 in the famous Halper auction in 1999 (Lot #1546). The pin was available for a very short time by mail only to members of Mickey Mantle's fan club very early in his career. This is the first example Robert Edward Auctions has ever offered in thirty-five years. Light oxidation on reverse as expected. Diameter: 1.25 inches. In Near Mint to Mint condition. Reserve $3,500. Estimate $7,000/$10,000. SOLD FOR $5,800.00
