Circa 1912 Honus Wagner and Art Butler Statues
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $2,610.00
This majestic pair of finely detailed plaster statues presents outstanding likenesses of Honus Wagner and Art Butler. The base of the statues identify them as manufactured by the "Sinamaker Art Statuary Company." The Honus Wagner statue is dated 1912, the Art Butler statue 1913. Each player is identified by a metal plate on the front of the base. Over the years we have seen several different players from this series, all major stars such as Wagner, Cobb, and Mathewson. They are very rare. We have seen fewer than ten examples in total of the several different known players in the series over the past thirty-five years. It is very interesting to note that this is the first example of shortstop Art Butler to surface, and that Butler is the only non-star player known. Butler played just six seasons in the majors, including 1913 and 1914 with Pittsburgh, with a .241 lifetime average. The fact that he is in the set at all suggests that this series may have actually included all the Pirates players, though only these two Pirate players are known. Both the Wagner and Butler statues are painted silver, the only two examples we have seen painted in this manner. Other examples we have seen are unpainted white plaster. Each statue has a few minor scratches and scuffs, and the Wagner has a virtually undetectable minor repair, but these flaws are insignificant and have absolutely no impact on the extraordinary display value of this striking and unique pair, each of which is overall in Very Good to Excellent condition. These are tremendous examples of baseball figural art, from an extremely rare art statue series. This is the only series of statues from this era featuring real likenesses of players, and we regard these as among the rarest, best, and most impressive of all baseball statues ever produced. Total 2 statues. Height: 19.5 inches each. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $2,610.00
