Extraordinary 1907 Baseball Figures (2)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $3,480.00

Amazing pair of art statues dating from 1907, featuring a pitcher and a catcher. Each is plaster with heavy lead paint which gives the figures the impression of bronzes. Each stands twenty-two inches tall, and is engraved "Copyright 1907 American Mamito Co Phila. Pa" on the base. These are simply incredible examples of early baseball figural art. Very few baseball figural pieces even approach the artistry and quality of this matched set. The statues have a few minor chips and scratches, which are of little consequence to their spectacular and overall Excellent appearance. A chip to the back of the leg of the catcher (with no impact on display value) is very interesting with reference to the construction of the figures, as it reveals an interior wood support. These statues are very substantial museum-quality pieces, ideal for display. They were no doubt very expensive when issued. We have never seen another figure from this set. Total 2 figures. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $3,480.00
