Circa 1890 Baseball Tobacco Jar with Georgetown University Crest

Circa 1890 ceramic tobacco jar, expertly crafted in white glass, handsomely illustrated with an extremely colorful nineteenth-century baseball scene on front. On the side opposite the baseball motif is a regal crest bearing "Collegium Georgiopolitanum 1789" which identifies this as a Georgetown University piece. This institution has participated in intercollegiate baseball since the late nineteenth century. While we have identified this piece as a tobacco jar, it may have also been intended for use as a candy or spice jar. This jar is a beautiful and very rare nineteenth-century baseball display piece.
