1891 Diamond King Cigar Box

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,624.00

Extremely rare "Diamond King" brand cigar box is one of the best of all nineteenth-century cigar boxes. The 100-count wooden cigar box features an extremely colorful and beautifully designed interior label, with a batter and pitcher on each side of a game-in-progress scene superimposed over a giant baseball. This is one of the most striking and elaborately designed of all cigar box labels. A smaller side label featuring the same game-in-progress scene appears on the exterior of the box. The condition of the box is exceptional. The interior label and the side label (which is usually subject to much wear on early cigar boxes) are both in Excellent condition, with bright, crisp colors. Even the wraparound tax stamps (which are hand dated "10/31/91") are completely intact. This is the first example of this box we have ever seen. Tremendous for display. Dimensions: 10 x 4.25 x 5 inches. Excellent condition. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,624.00
