1969 Syracuse Chiefs Team-Signed Baseball With Thurman Munson Pre-Rookie Signature
Starting Bid - $800.00, Sold For - $2,900.00
1969 International League Champion Syracuse Chiefs minor league team-signed baseball is signed by twenty-one players including future New York Yankees star Thurman Munson. The souvenir baseball is stamped "Syracuse Chiefs" in red on the sweet spot and has been signed using several different colors of ballpoint pens. Munson's signature, crisp and bold in blue ink, appears on a side panel and grades a solid "9" on a scale of "1" to "10." All other signatures also grade "9," with the exception of three slightly lesser ("6"). After signing with the Yankees in 1968 as their number-one pick in the amateur free-agent draft, Munson played fewer than 100 games in the minor leagues with the Binghamton Triplets and Syracuse before being called up to play with the Yankees in 1969. Because he was with Syracuse for such a short period of time, it is unlikely he had the opportunity to sign many team balls. This is the first example we have ever offered, and the earliest Munson signature that we have seen. Thurman Munson was the first catcher to ever win the American League Rookie of the Year Award, in 1970. Munson achieved many other honors during his distinguished eleven-year career that was tragically cut short by a fatal plane crash. The Yankees have honored Munson with the retirement of his number "15." The great force of his personality was appreciated by his teammates, who bestowed upon him the honor of captain, as well as by fans who honor his memory to this day. This is a very rare signed baseball dating from the earliest days of Munson's career in the minors, prior to joining the Yankees. The ball is in Ex-Mt condition. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $2,900.00
