1944 Autographed Hall of Fame Baseball with Babe Ruth (Mel Allen Estate)
Starting Bid - $4,000.00, Sold For - $10,440.00
This autographed baseball was legendary Yankee announcer Mel Allen's most prized baseball possession. The Spalding "Official Pro-League" baseball was signed by ten players including Babe Ruth at the official ceremonies commemorating Connie Mack's "50th Anniversary in Baseball" celebration held at Connie Mack Stadium on Friday, August 4, 1944. Many great players of the past were on hand that day to celebrate Mack's fifty years in baseball. As a finale to the ceremony, Connie Mack named his all-time, all-star team of living players. Among the players named, only Cobb and Cochrane were not able to attend. All the others, including Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, and Tris Speaker, were on hand to participate in the celebration. Eight of the ten signatures on this ball are Hall of Famers. The signatures include: Babe Ruth (sweet spot), Honus Wagner, Tris Speaker, George Sisler, Roger Bresnahan, Frank Frisch, Eddie Collins, "Red" Murray, and Duffy Lewis. The signatures are extraordinarily clean and bold, averaging a "9" on a scale of "1 to 10." The Walter Johnson signature which appears on the sweet spot beneath Ruth has been cited as a possible clubhouse signature. This ball originates from the estate of legendary announcer Mel Allen, which was handled by Robert Edward Auctions in 1997. The ball is in bright, clean, Near Mint condition with bold and distinct manufacturer's stampings. According to the Allen family, Mel Allen kept this ball prominently displayed on his desk at home, which is exactly where Robert Edward Auctions found it when we organized the Mel Allen Estate Collection for auction in 1997. Though he had a tremendous amount of memorabilia, this was one of the few pieces that he personally treasured. This ball appeared as lot 508 in Robert Edward Auctions' June 1997 sale. It sold at that time for $9,348 and has been consigned to this sale directly from the original buyer. The ball is accompanied by a letter from REA President Robert Lifson regarding the provenance of the ball, as well as a copy of the 1997 Robert Edward Auctions catalog. PSA/DNA now also provides grading for baseballs. Robert Edward Auctions has chosen this as one of several signed baseballs in the auction to be graded and encapsulated by PSA/DNA, to highlight this recently introduced PSA service. PSA has graded the signatures overall PSA 8 NM-MT, graded the baseball 8 NM-MT, and assigned an overall grade of "8.5" (The extra half-point has been awarded by PSA to the overall grade of the ball due to extraordinary eye-appeal.) This is a spectacular autographed ball in essentially flawless condition, featuring extraordinary signatures of many of the game's greatest legends. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $4,000. Estimate $8,000/$12,000. SOLD FOR $10,440.00
