Circa 1883 Mungos Negro Baseball Cigar Box
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,624.00
The interior label of this S. Davis & Sons "Mungos" brand cigar box features a colorful and comical baseball scene. The players are depicted as caricatures of African-Americans, which was a very popular illustration style at this time. The label is copyrighted by the "Sun Litho Company of Toronto, & Montreal." The colorful exterior labels include a small side label which reads "Colorado," a traditional side label featuring the same image as appears on the interior lid (some imperfections to this label, but far less than usually seen on exterior labels), tax stamps, and a very colorful oval box-sealing label. The interior label, in particular, has been perfectly preserved, ideally protected from the elements in the closed wooden cigar box. The entire box is in particularly strong Excellent condition. This is the only example of this extremely unusual and early baseball cigar box that we have ever seen. Dimensions: 8.5 x 5 x 2.5 inches. Reserve $400. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,624.00
