1934 Tour of Japan Game Ticket and Advertising Posters (5)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,900.00
During the 1934 "Tour of Japan," a series of striking advertising posters celebrating the tour were posted at kiosks in Japan, where magazines and newspapers were sold, promoting the special extensive newspaper coverage of the much-celebrated tour. These are among the rarest and most substantial of all 1934 tour-related artifacts, but have received very little attention because of their great rarity. Presented is a collection of four different of these kiosk advertising posters issued during the tour. Each is designed with a photograph and accompanying text in Japanese along the right. Two posters feature Babe Ruth, one crossing home plate, and the other demonstrating his mighty swing. A third poster features Jimmie Foxx crossing home plate. The fourth advertising poster captures the entire American team in a classic team pose. The American All Stars participating in the 1934 Tour of Japan included stars such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Cochrane, Lefty Gomez, Earl Averill, spy Moe Berg, and manager Connie Mack. Accompanying the four posters is an original ticket stub to one of the games in Japan, with a torn corner for cancellation as intended, otherwise in Excellent condition. The four posters are in remarkably fine overall Excellent to Mint condition. Each measures 14.5 x 9.25 inches and has been uniformly matted and framed to total dimensions of 19 x 13.5 inches. Total 5 items (four posters and one ticket). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,900.00
