1869/1870 Cincinnati Red Stocking Cigar Box
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $2,900.00
This extremely rare wooden cigar box can be dated to 1869 or 1870, as the end label pictures a player, bat at side, in a Cincinnati Red Stocking uniform. It is the only known example. Additional advertising label on the side of the box notes that the cigars were manufactured by local Ohioan Fred Burrell. This box is of extraordinary significance as this is the very first baseball cigar box ever produced, in tribute to baseball's very first professional team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings. It is interesting to note that Red Stockings Cigars is also responsible for the earliest ever player endorsement for a product. George Wright, star of the 1869 Reds, endorsed Red Stockings Cigars and was featured on advertising posters for the brand. Like the box, only one example of a Red Stockings Cigars advertising poster featuring George Wright is known to exist. The label on this box is not to be confused with the similarly designed 1884 (and later) Boston Red Stockings cigar box labels which feature a similarly posed player in a Boston Red Stockings uniform. Those labels (we have seen two styles) are slightly modified copies of the original label which appears on this earlier circa 1870 box. The Red Stockings left Cincinnati for Boston following the 1870 season, and became the Boston Red Stockings of the newly formed National Association. The box includes its original wood top and has several sealing labels attached. The box top is detached and there is general wear and small tears to the labels, but considering its fragile nature and age, the box has survived remarkably well. In Very Good condition overall. Dimensions: 7.5 x 4.25 x 4.25 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $2,900.00
