1906 Connie Mack Autograph Letter Signed Cornelius McGillicuddy
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $580.00
One-page handwritten letter by Connie Mack, dated "3/15 - 06," on official "American Base Ball Club of Philadelphia" stationery, is boldly signed using his full legal name "Cornelius McGillicuddy" ("10") in black fountain pen. Connie Mack's name was always Cornelius McGillicuddy. He never legally changed it to "Connie Mack." In fact his grandson, who is a very well-known politician in Florida who also goes by the name of Connie Mack, is also legally named "Cornelius McGillicuddy." Legend has it that sportswriters found Mack's real name too unwieldy for headlines and scorecards, so they shortened it, and the nickname caught on. The content of this letter concerns the rent arrangements for a property apparently owned by Mack and formally acknowledges receipt of a rent payment. It reads in full: "BB Hoffman Bros, To rent for room over 2711-2713-2715 Germantown Avenue. for one month from March 15th to April 15th in advance. Received Payment. Cornelius McGillicuddy." In addition to the extremely rare signature form, this letter is remarkable as it is one of the earliest dated correspondences from Mack known to exist, and was written while he was managing the Athletics, a team that included Rube Waddell, Eddie Plank, and Chief Bender on its roster. The Philadelphia Athletics stationery lists his name in the upper right as part of the stationery design as "Connie Mack." The letter has normal mailing fold lines and some minor ruffling along the right edge, and is otherwise in Excellent condition. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $580.00
