1977 Topps Uncut Proof Sheets With Unissued Cards (2 Sheets)
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $2,320.00
Two 1977 Topps uncut proof sheets, each with 66 cards, including many unissued cards. These sheets were actually printed on November 22, 1976 (as noted by ink stamp on margins). The production of a baseball card set, especially in relatively modern times, actually begins late in the previous year. Because these proof sheets for the 1977 set were produced so early, the cards on these sheets include many photographs which are different from those finally issued, primarily due to team changes. 1977 was a watershed year for team changes in this regard for Topps, due to the new practice of free agency. In fact, this is why the famous 1977 Topps unissued card of Reggie Jackson with Baltimore exists (Jackson signed with the Yankees in the off-season, and appears as a Yankee on his issued 1977 Topps card). It will take careful comparison of every card on these two sheets to identify all the unissued cards and various changes. Included are seven issued 1977 Topps cards of players which represent photo changes. It is interesting to note that the photos used on the proof sheets of these players are all batting or pitching poses while the final issued cards have "shoulder-up" photos. This is because photographs were not available of these players in their new uniforms, so Topps addressed this problem by airbrushing the caps of portrait poses. Stars on these sheets include Robin Yount, Jim Palmer, Fergie Jenkins, Dave Parker, Carlton Fisk, and Gaylord Perry. Unissued cards published with different poses include Pole, Braun, Meyer, Ashby, Fitzmorris, White, Greif, and Singer. These are true proof sheets with blank backs and 66 cards per sheet, as opposed to 132-card production sheets. Both sheets have blank backs and have color bars along the bottom with printing notations ("Side A, Board #6") printed on the right border of each sheet. Both sheets have a printed date, "Nov 22, 1976," along the bottom. The sheets are in Ex-Mt condition with typical minor edge and corner wear; the interior cards are Near Mint. Dimensions: each 29 x 23 inches. Total 2 sheets. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $2,320.00
