1951 Wheaties Complete Unassembled Box Set (6)

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $928.00

Complete set of 1951 Wheaties presented in unassembled box form in absolutely Mint condition. The 1951 Wheaties set was issued one card per individual single-serving box of Wheaties cereal. The set features the following stars from several sports: Stan Musial, Ted Williams, George Mikan, Bob Feller, Sam Snead, and Johnny Lujack. This set has always been one of the rarest of all early 1950s food issues, and is many times rarer than the Wheaties set issued in 1952, which was widely distributed and appeared on larger "family size" boxes. In the early 1990s, a small find of Mint unassembled boxes of 1951 Wheaties surfaced, originating from a former Wheaties employee. We're not sure exactly how many sets were found, but we believe it was approximately 100 to 150 boxes in total. All have long been scattered to the four corners of the collecting world. All but a handful of unassembled 1951 Wheaties boxes in the hobby originate from this find. When the Stan Musial unassembled box appeared at auction just prior to the find, that one box alone sold for $1,200. Immediately after the find, the entire set could be purchased for no more than this amount. Today individual boxes, let alone sets, rarely surface. The offered set was purchased directly from the find in 1992. The boxes are completely flat (each approximately 9 x 7.25 inches), unassembled, and in absolutely Gem Mint condition. Total 6 boxes. Reserve $300. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $928.00
