1933 R309 Goudey Babe Ruth Premium Counter Display Sign

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,276.00

Extremely rare 1933 Goudey advertising counter display. The 1933 R309 Goudey cardboard premium of Babe Ruth is one of the most substantial of all Ruth cards. This premium was available to youngsters only by mail in exchange for fifty 1933 "Big League Chewing Gum" wrappers. To make sure that kids understood how great this card was, Goudey prepared examples with advertising wrap to create a store display counter sign for candy store owners. This was a relatively inexpensive yet extremely effective approach to creating this counter display, especially since the R309 premium was already equipped with an easel stand on its reverse. The advertising label wraps around the back exactly as affixed by Goudey, and reads "FREE! - This photographic print for 50 wrappers of BIG LEAGUE CHEWING GUM - Send them to-day to - GOUDEY GUM CO. (Allston Sta.) Boston, Mass - OFFER EXPIRES.....NOVEMBER 1st, 1933" in red print. Theoretically the label could be removed. The card has some even corner wear with a few light surface scratches. As a card it is technically in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. The easel back is completely intact and the paper advertisement is in Excellent condition. This is the only example we have ever seen of this rare Goudey counter sign. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,276.00
