Unique 1933 R309 Goudey Babe Ruth Proof
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,060.00
This R309 Goudey premium printer's proof originates from the files of the Goudey Gum Company. Printed on paper stock, surrounded by a thin green border within a larger white margin, this unique proof identifies Ruth in a green panel along the bottom border, as opposed to the gold panel which appears on issued R309s. The famous image of Ruth in his classic swing-thru pose is incredibly crisp and flawlessly clear, far more so than on the issued R309 of Ruth. The image really "pops" and has an almost three-dimensional appearance. The quality of the image on printer's proof material is sometimes far superior to that of the final published product, and that is certainly the case here. This is an extraordinary unique proof of one of Babe Ruth's most impressive cards from the files of Goudey. Ideal for display. This Goudey proof was once a part of the Barry Halper Collection. It appeared in the famous Halper auction in 1999 as lot 926 and sold for $5,750. Total dimensions: 12.5 x 15 inches. Near Mint to Mint condition. The image area of the card (9 x 5.5 inches) is Gem Mint. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $4,060.00
