1914 B18 Blankets Complete Set (181)

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $17,400.00

Presented is one of the finest sets of B18s blankets ever assembled. This is a stunning complete set of 181 different B18 blankets: 98% range from Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt-Mt, 2% Vg-Ex to Ex. This remarkable collection is missing only four printing variation blankets to be a complete master set (not including the seventeen almost impossible-to-find red-infield variations, which are so rare that guides do not consider them a part of the total set count). Because they are not traditional cards, and are not yet graded by PSA, B18s have been somewhat overlooked by many collectors. They will have their day. B18s represent one of the most outstanding values of all baseball tobacco issues. They are also one of the most interesting and difficult of all tobacco sets to complete. The set includes few Hall of Famers, but many scarcities and rarities. The assembly of this set was the result of a tremendous investment in time and energy, and a dedication to collecting that is very rare, over a period of over ten years. B18 sets just don't "turn up," let alone in such extraordinary high-grade. They have to be assembled, one by one. This miracle set was one of the pride and joys of one of the most advanced and meticulous collectors to ever open an American Card Catalog. This set offers a unique opportunity to acquire the finest set of B18s we have ever seen. (And we've seen a lot of B18s.) We cannot imagine how many B18s were considered in its assembly. The four printing-variation blankets missing for a complete master set are as follows: Chance (yellow), Griffith (white/red), O'Neill (red), Shanks (white), plus the seventeen red-infield variations. Included among the 181 B18s in this collection are dozens of the rare and scarce designs and variations. A few of these keys are graded individually as follows: Carey/purple (Nr/Mt), Carey/red (Nr/Mt), Cavanaugh/brown (Ex-Mt), Chance/green (Ex-Mt), Chance/brown (Ex-Mt), Cobb/white (slight o/c, otherwise Nr/Mt-Mt), Cobb/brown (Nr/Mt), Gandil/green (Nr/Mt-Mt), Gandil/brown (Nr/Mt-Mt), Huggins/yellow (overprinted with brown in the upper right, otherwise Ex-Mt), Huggins/purple (Nr/Mt-Mt), Jackson/purple (we detect some very fine threading holes when examined very carefully, almost impossible to see, otherwise Nr/Mt), Jackson/yellow (slightly o/c, otherwise Nr/Mt), W. Johnson/brown (Nr/Mt), W. Johnson/green (Nr/Mt), Maranville/white (Nr/Mt), Maranville/brown (Nr/Mt), Stengel/blue (Ex-Mt), Stengel/green (Nr/Mt), Wallace/purple (Nr/Mt-Mt), Wallace/red (Nr/Mt), Wheat/blue (Ex-Mt), Wheat/green (Ex). This is an almost flawlessly clean, very well centered (centering problems are often a significant issue with B18s), carefully assembled, simply outstanding collection of one of tobacco collecting's most exotic issues, put together over a period of many years by a very advanced and dedicated longtime collector. Accompanied by an original B18 packaging envelope with unbroken packaging strip and never unfolded blanket (Stengel) which shows exactly how these felt tobacco premiums were issued. Total 182 blankets. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$8,000. SOLD FOR $17,400.00
