1988 Topps Test Prehistoric Baseball Card Iron-On Original Artwork

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $928.00

There has always been a debate among scholars about exactly when baseball was invented, and when the first baseball card was issued. Finally, both questions can be answered. Well, maybe not. But it does seem fitting to close this catalog, which is so devoted to documenting the origins of baseball, baseball cards, the collecting world, original artwork, and nonsport cards, with this original Topps nonsport artwork of a "prehistoric" baseball card. This artwork may be familiar to many as it was one of the signature pieces, and one of the most memorable examples of original art from the famous 1989 Topps auction. This is the original painting to one of eighteen iron-ons from the 1988 Topps T-Shirt Factory Iron-On test set. Ten of the original paintings to this set were sold at the 1989 Topps auction. This was the artwork prize of the set. It appeared as Lot 135c and sold for $770, which was the highest price realized for any of the hundreds of nonsport artworks which appeared in the historic sale, including the hundreds of original Wacky Pak artworks which were also offered in that sale. This artwork has been consigned directly from the original purchaser at the 1989 Topps auction. The artwork was also used by Topps on the top of the display box for the set. Included is an original iron-on (8 x 6 inches). On the issued iron-on we can see that the name added in the production process to the red stripe in the lower right , identifying the batter for the "Reptiles" team, is "Tyrannosaurus Cobb." The artwork measures 9 x 7 inches, and is mounted on an artist board measuring 14 x 9 inches, with protective plastic overlay, and protective paper wrap with Topps production-related notations. This is an extraordinary nonsport artwork with incredible detail and of tremendously high quality. This set has much in common in spirit with Wacky Paks, and features some of the best artwork ever produced by Topps. This is the only baseball related artwork in the series. Mint condition. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $928.00
