1951 Bowman Jets, Rockets, and Spacemen Complete Set on Three Uncut Sheets

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $1,972.00

Presented is the entire 108-card set of 1951 Bowman "Jets, Rockets, and Spacemen" on three 36-card uncut sheets. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the only complete set of "Jets, Rockets, and Spacemen" known to exist in uncut form. Two of the sheets are proof sheets, with large surrounding margins and blank backs; the third sheet is a standard production sheet without extra surrounding margins, and with fully printed backs. The proof sheets represent the first thirty-six cards (#1-36) and the last thirty-six cards (#73-108) of the set. The production sheet features the middle numbers (#37-72). Interestingly, the backs of the proof sheets have been neatly divided by pencil lines into "card sections," with the card number handwritten with large numerals in the center of each card "box." These sheets were obviously used by Bowman in the production of the set to ensure that the cards were each properly numbered. The low-number proof sheet is in spectacular Excellent to Mint condition. The high-number proof sheet has a little very minor tape residue (relating to use in the proofing process) in the margin area in the upper left, mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy, and which could probably be cleaned off if desired, and which does not affect the cards. This sheet also has a little corner rounding and a tiny chip in the upper left, all in the margin area only and not affecting the cards. It is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. The third sheet, the production sheet with the middle-number cards with backs, would frame and display very well but does have a few condition problems. There is a tear (approx. one inch) in the card in the upper left corner, some surface scraping affects the left edge of the card below, a clean tear (approx three inches) along the left border of the sheet (between third and fourth cards from the bottom), a couple of creases including a heavy crease which runs across the entire bottom row, and some surface chipping and small tearing affecting the two cards in the lower right corner. Most of the interior cards are still Nr/Mt, and the sheet still displays beautifully and is ideal for display, but clearly this sheet has a few condition problems that are not shared by the other two almost perfect proof sheets. In a frame on the wall, the serious imperfections of the third sheet would be of little consequence. "Jets, Rockets, and Spacemen" is one of the most popular of all non-sport issues. This set is universally recognized as one of card collecting's greatest science-fiction sets, and is revered for its spectacular artwork illustrations of future space travel. Total 3 sheets. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $1,972.00
