1951 Bowman Jets, Rockets, Spacemen Original Alternate Card Artwork #66

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,044.00

1951 Bowman "Jets, Rockets, Spacemen" original watercolor painting appears to be the issued artwork to card #66, but extremely close examination reveals this is actually a slightly different alternate version of the artwork actually used by Bowman in the production of the set. This is not a preliminary, but a fully finished painting. Spectacularly bright and detailed, the artwork is much larger than normal "Jets, Rockets, and Spacemen" artworks, which all measure exactly 4.25 x 6.25 inches. Including the border, the offered artwork measures 13.5 x 10 inches, with the image area measuring 9 x 7 inches. Its larger size and incredible quality suggest this painting was almost certainly produced as an early sample for Bowman while in the planning stages of production for the set. Card #6 is appropriately entitled "End of a Spaceship," and features a manned spaceship being destroyed by a ball of flaming metal. Bright, clean, crisp, and with astounding detail. This is a spectacular original artwork from the early planning stages of one of collecting's premier science fiction sets. Watercolor on board. Near Mint to Mint condition. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,044.00
