1966 Batman Original Card Artwork (Norm Saunders)

Starting Bid - $800.00, Sold For - $4,350.00

Presented is the original artwork to card #15A "Gotham Gallants" from the 1966 Topps "Batman" card set. Batman took the world by storm in 1966 with the introduction of the wildly popular Batman television series. Topps joined the bandwagon with several series of card sets devoted to the Caped Crusader. This is a tremendous artwork from this classic 1960s card set, featuring a particularly elaborate scene including both Batman and Robin, doing what they do best, rescuing a damsel in distress. Batman is walking a tightrope, which is on fire along with the building from which he is escaping, and Robin is reaching out to help Batman and the leggy blond he is rescuing. This artwork has it all. The painting features both primary characters, great action, tremendous background detail, and is the work of the legendary Norm Saunders. The gouache-on-cardboard artwork measures 5 x 3.5 inches and is accompanied by an example of the issued card. It is interesting to note that the original artwork includes some additional areas around the perimeter which were cropped out by Topps when the card was published. This is an exceptional and rare original artwork from one of the most popular of all Topps non-sport issues. Ex-Mt. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $4,350.00
