1962 Topps Civil War News Original Artwork #23
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $4,640.00
Original 1962 Topps "Civil War News" card artwork (3.75 x 5.25 inches). This artwork was used to produce the famous card #23, entitled "Crushed By The Wheels," from this extremely popular set which chronicles the rich history of the Civil War. This card is notorious for the gruesome scene it features, and is one of the most controversial of all non-sport cards ever issued by Topps. The artwork is extremely detailed, capturing the horror of the wounded soldier's painful death in an explicit manner that many parents felt was inappropriate to be marketed to youngsters in a historical bubble-gum card set. Kids, of course, loved it. While all Civil War News card artwork is traditionally attributed to Norm Saunders, the research of Norm Saunders' son, David, an expert and scholar regarding his father's work, reveals that many cards in the set, including this one, are actually a collaborative effort by Norm Saunders and fellow Topps staff artist Maurice Blumenthal. The artwork is in Near Mint condition and is accompanied by an example of the issued card. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $4,640.00
