1935 R27 Cartoon Comics & 1936 R28 Cartoon Adventures Sets (94/96)

Two very rare and closely related 1930s card issues are represented by this lot. Included are 46 different (out of 48 in the set) 1935 R27 "Cartoon Comics," missing only #130 and 132 for completion, plus the complete 48-card set of 1936 R28 "Cartoon Adventures." The 1935 "Cartoon Comics" set is believed to be the earlier of two issues produced by the same manufacturer as the 1936 "Cartoon Adventures" set. Both sets have blank backs and were issued in perforated strips. 1) The 1935 R27 "Cartoon Comics" set features six popular 1930s characters, each with a subset consisting of one portrait and seven action story cards. Each card (except the "Joe Palooka" series cards) carry a "Chicago Tribune" credit line and 1935 copyright date. The cards are numbered 101 through 148. The two cards missing for completion are #130 and #132 (both "Moon Mullins" series cards). The cards grade as follows by character: Dick Tracy (4 Vg-Ex/Ex, 4 Vg-Ex); Little Orphan Annie (6 Vg-Ex, 2 Vg), Harold Teen (3 Ex, 3 Vg-Ex/Ex, 1 Vg-Ex, 1 Gd); Moon Mullins (1 Vg-Ex/Ex, 1 Vg, 1 Vg, 1 Gd, 2 Fr, 1 Pr); Joe Palooka (6 Ex, 2 Vg-Ex/Ex, 1 Vg-Ex); Terry and the Pirates (1 Ex, 3 Vg-Ex/Ex, 2 Vg-Ex, 1 Vg). 2) The 48-card 1936 R28 "Cartoon Adventures" set features four popular 1930s characters. Three characters are represented by a subset consisting of one portrait and seven action story cards. Twenty-four cards (#425 to 448) are devoted to Buck Rogers. The cards grade as follows by character: Buck Rogers (16 cards range from Ex to Ex-Mt, 6 Vg-Ex/Ex, 5 Vg-Ex); Tailspin Tommy (3 Vg-Ex/Ex, 2 Vg-Ex, 1 Vg, 2 Gd, with small tape mounting marks on blank reverses); Tarzan of the Apes (4 Ex-Mt, 2 Ex, 2 Vg-Ex,); Broncho Bill (2 Ex, 6 Vg-Ex, with small tape mounting marks on blank reverses). The "Cartoon Adventures" 24-card Buck Rogers subset, which is in exceptionally high grade, is highly prized by both science-fiction character collectors and non-sport card collectors. Total 94 cards.
